Large Vietnamese-American community
Westminster is home to one of the largest Vietnamese-American communities in the United States, centered in the historic Little Saigon neighborhood.
Westminster's Vietnamese-American community took root in the 1970s and early 1980s following the end of the Vietnam War, as refugees and immigrants established homes and businesses in the city's affordable neighborhoods. Over the decades, this community grew to become one of the largest concentrations of Vietnamese people outside Vietnam, with Vietnamese restaurants, shops, and cultural businesses clustered primarily along Bolsa Avenue and neighboring streets. The neighborhood is known as Little Saigon and has become a cultural center for Vietnamese Americans throughout Southern California.
Today, the community organizes and celebrates major cultural observances including Tết Festival, the lunar new year celebration, and Black April Memorial Week, which honors those lost during the fall of Saigon. The Asian Garden Mall has become a landmark destination for shopping, dining, and cultural exchange. These gathering places and traditions are where extended families meet, celebrate milestones, and maintain connections across generations.
