Health classes explained
Term life premiums are structured around rate classifications. While nomenclature differs somewhat across insurers, the tiered structure remains uniform: Preferred Plus (sometimes termed Super Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard, with additional table ratings for elevated risks. Nicotine consumers occupy a separate class hierarchy with corresponding surcharges.
The health inquiry requests candid self-assessment: Excellent corresponds to Preferred Plus, Very good to Preferred, Good to Standard Plus, and Average to Standard. Quotations are calculated from that class assumption; the insurer validates the actual class following underwriting evaluation. When uncertain, obtain quotes for two distinct classes and review the contrast; the application process will determine the accurate class. Selecting a favorable classification does not reduce the ultimate premium—it only reduces quote reliability.
What underwriters look at
Susman Insurance Agency can assist in identifying carriers with more lenient standards for your particular health situation—often a more meaningful factor than the advertised rate.
How to use the quote tool
The four rate tiers—Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard—explained, including the factors that determine placement and movement.
Factors assessed include physical measurements (height and weight), vital statistics (blood pressure and cholesterol), familial medical background (heart attacks or malignancies before age 60), motor-vehicle history, medication profile, profession and recreational activities, and nicotine or tobacco consumption. Superior classifications demand favorable findings in virtually every category; Preferred tiers offer greater flexibility; Standard Plus and Standard permit managed ailments such as medicated hypertension.
